Mass Shooting at Virginia Tech

"At least 20 people were killed this morning at Virginia
Polytechnic Institute and University after a shooting spree at two
buildings on the campus." Nobody seems to know much yet on what
happened. These things do seem to take place in locations where it’s
not legal for people with carry permits to carry guns, though…  I
certainly wish that someone had been in a position to shoot this guy at
the outset.

…reader John Lucas, who works with a Virginia law
firm, emails that Va. Tech is a "gun-free zone." Well, for those who
follow the law. There was an effort to change that but it failed: "A
bill that would have given college students and employees the right to
carry handguns on campus died with nary a shot being fired in the
General Assembly."

I’d like to think that would be revisited in the wake of this tragic
reminder that criminals don’t follow guns laws, but I don’t imagine one
will have to look far to find people drawing the wrong conclusions.

UPDATE: No, not far.  Trust the White House press corps to be get in there early:

The White House presser has started, and of course the first
questions are about gun control. Reporters want to know whether gun
control would have prevented this.

word on whether reporters asked if people being allowed to carry arms
to defend themselves might have prevented this.

One response to “Mass Shooting at Virginia Tech

  1. “…criminals don’t follow guns laws…”
What a keen tautological — and irrelevant — insight.
The question isn’t if people were packing nearby would there have been fewer deaths. The question is, if such a law was in place, how many MORE deaths would there have been in the intervening months or years.
